Every month we talk to restaurant and cafe operators who are considering three or four Dubai agencies. Most of them are evaluating on the wrong criteria, portfolio screenshots, LinkedIn follower counts, flashy case studies with no attached numbers. Here is the framework we would use if we were on the other side of the table.
What makes an F&B marketing agency specifically different
A generic Dubai agency can brief a food shoot, run Instagram, and buy Meta ads. An F&B specialist knows that the hero plate photo size on Talabat's thumbnail is 90×90 pixels; that Deliveroo's algorithm weighs recent review velocity over peak star rating; that Instagram grid cadence for a brunch concept has to shift by three hours in summer; that cost per cover is a more honest KPI than cost per acquisition. Specialism compounds, the generalist is still learning the ropes you need already mastered.
The eight questions to ask every F&B marketing agency on a Dubai shortlist
1) Do you shoot food in-house or outsource it? 2) Who writes the captions, in-house or freelance? 3) What delivery platforms do you actively manage, not just ‘post to’? 4) Show me a cost-per-cover report, not a reach report. 5) What's your reply SLA on DMs during peak dayparts? 6) Who runs the account day-to-day, and will I meet them before signing? 7) What happens if media spend outperforms forecast, do we scale or cap? 8) Can you name three restaurants you've turned down, and why?
The red flags
Monthly retainers quoted below AED 5,000 (freelancer rate, not agency rate). Media spend bundled into the retainer with no transparency. ‘Unlimited posts’ or ‘unlimited reels’ promises. Case studies that show follower growth but no revenue or covers. Any agency that cannot clearly tell you which three things they do not do. Over-reliance on templates, if the first proposal looks copy-pasted, the first month of work will too.
The honest trade-offs
Full-service specialists cost more than general-practice agencies, and much more than freelancers. The upside: no coordination tax, embedded food crew, deep delivery-platform knowledge, and one accountable team instead of three vendors. Freelancers win on cost; general agencies win on breadth; F&B specialists win on compounding returns inside one category. Pick based on your biggest constraint.
What good looks like after 90 days
After 90 days with a decent F&B marketing agency in Dubai, you should see: a measurably higher Google Business Profile rating or review count, a reduced cost per cover, improved delivery-platform listing conversion (hero image click-through), a consistent weekly content cadence that your team is not scrambling for, and a monthly report that reads like a diagnostic, what shipped, what performed, what the data says to change, not a vanity screenshot deck.
