How to run a restaurant soft launch in Dubai: the owner's checklist

A practical soft-launch checklist for Dubai restaurant owners: who to invite, what to serve, what the kitchen must prove it can do, and the 48 hours after that decide whether you open strong.

How to run a restaurant soft launch in Dubai: the owner's checklist

A soft launch is the single most under-planned moment in a Dubai restaurant's life. Owners typically treat it as a dress rehearsal, which is wrong. It's a diagnostic test for the kitchen, the service, the menu economics, the content pipeline, and the word-of-mouth engine. Treated right, it predicts the first six months. Here's the honest checklist.

Who to invite (the guest list is 60% of the work)

Target 30-45 guests across three groups. (1) 10-15 F&B industry people: other restaurant owners nearby, suppliers, PR contacts, local food writers (not generic bloggers). (2) 10-15 target-diner-profile locals: residents of the surrounding towers or neighbourhood, your actual future repeat customers. (3) 5-10 content creators who match your brand (food-first accounts under 100k followers, not generic lifestyle).

What NOT to do with the guest list

Don't invite your extended family and friends. The soft launch is for feedback and reach, not applause. Family will tell you everything is wonderful because they love you, which teaches you nothing.

The menu for the night

Serve 60-70% of the full menu, not the hero dishes only. The kitchen needs to prove it can run the full offer under pressure, not that it can plate a signature dish. Set-menu format works best so service pacing is controlled.

What the kitchen must prove

Three things specifically. (1) The 90-minute window from guest-seated to dessert-cleared is held consistently. (2) The signature plate looks identical on plates 1 through 50. (3) Allergen and dietary modifications don't break the pass. If any of these fail at soft launch, you have exactly 2 weeks to fix before the public open or you're opening into negative reviews.

What the content pipeline must capture

A proper shoot runs through the soft launch: hero plates, chef at the pass, room full of guests, first-bite reactions (with consent), kitchen craft moments. This content is the launch-week library, not the dress rehearsal, so it has to be shot like a paid production.

The 48 hours after

Within 48 hours of the soft launch, three things must happen. (1) Content library edited and the first launch-week Reels queued. (2) Every attendee gets a personal thank-you (not a template email, a message from the owner naming something specific the guest said). (3) Google Business Profile seeded with the first 5-10 reviews from genuine guests who've now actually eaten the food.

The signal to look for

The number of guests who ask ‘when can we come back and pay for this?’ is the single clearest launch-success indicator. If more than 60% of your soft-launch guests ask that question unprompted, you're opening into demand. If under 40%, something in the menu or room needs fixing before public open.
